@DaveO: After I posted the question, I found another posting of yours that referred to it, and in the context realised that it must refer to Elliot Wave, of which I am of course aware (just a bit rusty after a longish break!).

I have to plead guilty to being a lazy trader in that respect, in that I have never studied it properly, and am therefore agnostic as to how useful it is.

There used to be a regular poster on here who posted EW-based trades, but I can't remember her(?) name. I've not noticed her(?) since I've been back.

Thanks for the references.

Elliott however was clever enough to recognize - even to write - EW cannot be used on relative prices ... this is very clear. It cannot. It works on one and only one variable that depends on itself thus those waves are scale-invariant fractals. Well they are not quite but .... fractals of two variables over time require 3 dimensional depiction ....

Monte, EWA = Elliott Wave Analysis.

Ralph Elliott died in 1948 but his pattern recognision work still remains valid today in ALL MARKETS on ALL TIMEFRAMES. Its not an easy methodology to trade until one get's over any ego probs and psychy hang-ups. Many other analyst gurus have stolen parts of Elliott's excellent works and renamed patterns as their own. Many traders hate and despise EW but I tend to regard them as lazy--- they didnt really do the work required to master. Lots of lazy "magic" seekers amongst the trading fraternity!

Robert Prechter, one of several EW gurus, rewrote Elliott's works as have others, but he complicated the work instead of simplifying it. He has always been a perma bear for stocks and that has detracted from his credibility. If you wish to study the subject you could do worse than buy Robert Miner's books. Miner is a good teacher but a useless trader ime.

@DaveO: I'm probably being dense or missed an earlier thread, but what are E/W traders?

Fundamental Opinions getting in the way of Price Action: Yes, been there, done that, and it's sometimes not a pretty sight. Much more wary these days.

@Chloe: [February 1, 2011 17:33 GMT]: Yes, Ashraf can be a little cryptic sometimes. You have to try to fill in the gaps / read between the lines with your own knowledge, experience and research.
